The 2024 Superbowl – History Repeats Itself

The 2024 Superbowl - History Repeats Itself

Las Vegas Nevada’s Allegiant Stadium hosted the 58th Superbowl on Sunday, February 11th. There was a thrilling kick-off between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

As everyone in mainstream society knows, the Super Bowl is an annual American tradition. January marks the start of the NFL playoffs. Almost every weekend, two teams that are in the running for the big championship game face off against each other in a win-or-go-home round. The team that wins moves on to the next round of the playoffs with a goal to hopefully take home the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl has become more popular with not only football fans but also music lovers and social media followers as well. Recently, there has been much attention on the relationship between Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce and music artist Taylor Swift. Some football fans believe that the attention on the pop artist and their relationship has taken away from the main subject of football. On the other hand, Taylor Swift fans have been more motivated to watch football than before because of the excitement of her cheering for her boyfriend. Sophomore Maddie Korin said, “I think people need to watch football for their own liking. If you like football, watch the Super Bowl for football. If you would like to watch the Super Bowl for Taylor Swift, then watch football for Taylor Swift.”

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers both had successful seasons. The Chiefs finished their season with 14 wins and 6 overall losses while the 49ers went into their playoffs with 14 wins and 5 losses. Although they both have very similar statistics, their styles of play differ. Before the game, senior Riley Alberts said,  “I’m excited to see the matchup for the Super Bowl because the teams playing are very even and either team could win. This should make a really exciting and great game.”

The 49ers rookie quarterback, Brock Purdy, has helped prove his spot on the team, Coming in as a rookie can be difficult with all the pressure from not only your team but regular football fans. There is a lot of societal pressure being the starting quarterback since Purdy has helped guide his team to the big championship. The quarterback role comes with many expectations, including the ability to be a good leader. It can be difficult to find a voice, in a crowd of more experienced and older players. Brock’s competitor, Patrick Mahomes, the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, took his team to the Super Bowl after his sixth year as a starting quarterback.

In the 58th Super Bowl, the team that fought hard enough to earn the Vince Lambardi trophy was the Kansas City Chiefs. The game was very closely matched between the two teams. The game was back and forth until after the fourth quarter when the teams went into overtime. This game happened to be the second-ever Super Bowl Championship to go into overtime. Previous to overtime, the Chiefs and the 49ers had a 19 – 19 tied score. In the end, the score of the final game was 25 – 22. The Chiefs have goals for next season: they would like to make an effort to win their third Super Bowl in a row considering the fact that they won the 2023 Championship as well.
