Fierce competition, relentless passion, unapologetic authenticity, and emotional vulnerabilities, these are all things that spilled out of the screen and spoke  to the viewers during the 2026 Winter Olympic figure skating. This event experienced a surge of popularity this games, with 2.5 million viewers for Women’s Figure Skating and Pairs. The American skaters in particular were met with general favor, especially gold winning Alysa Liu, along with Amber Glenn, Ilia Malinin, and Madison Chock just to name a few. An Olympics to remember, the prominent themes of individuality and devotion inspired young viewers around the world. Just what made the 2026 Winter Olympics stand out from the past years, and how will these positive messages affect the younger generation, and figure skaters to come?

Alysa Liu rose up in popularity significantly after the games, with her instagram following jumping from 300,000 to over 5.3 million followers in a mere few weeks. People invigorated with Alysa’s ‘alternative’ style, unique ‘halo’ dyed hair, and her signature smiley piercing, Alysa quickly became an internet sensation. Though her authentic appearance and her incredible talent on the ice aren’t the only factors that contribute to her popularity.

When I asked sophomore Sarah McCarthy  about her thoughts, she shared: “I think the reason she gets a lot of media is because of her background: with how she started with figure skating but her dad made it really difficult, and then she got back into it, and now she’s in the Olympics. I found that inspiring,” she told me. Not only is Alysa’s determination and carefree attitude almost infectious, viewers have found it almost refreshing how Alysa is able to be completely herself, even in such a high stakes and professional environment. Alysa has been completely transparent and enthusiastic about her interests, wearing anime merch and even carrying a little Pochita plushie from Chainsaw man during interviews.

Sophomore Samantha Jacobs said: “I feel like out of all figure skaters you can tell her heart is really in it, and she’s so happy when she skates and talks, she just radiates positivity. She feels like a breath of fresh air, and like a real person while other athletes just feel rich and out of touch.” Not only is Alysa Liu popular, her fellow skaters such as Amber Glenn, Madison Chock, and Ilia Malinin have also found fame through the 2026 Winter Olympics. Motivating stories such as Ilia getting back up and continuing to skate an amazing routine after a fall, Amber Glenn executing a stand out skate to rise from 13th to 5th place overall, and Madison Chock and her Partner Evan Bates achieved a silver medal in the ice dance.

Sarah McCarthy wrapped up her thoughts perfectly, sharing: “This will definitely inspire people. Especially with all the inclusivity and amazing stories of where people come from, this could be a turning page for the future.” All in all, the 2026 Winter Olympics have turned a page for both figure skating and young viewers around the world.
