We all know there is a big difference in popularity between men’s and women’s sports, but what we all want to know is why? Men’s professional sports tend to gain more attention than women’s because men’s sports have been around for a long time and they have been the primary entertainment for audiences all around the world. Women’s sport on the other hand is a new modern form of entertainment that started gaining popularity around 1972. They also lack funding for the sport and less opportunities compared to men. Despite these challenges women’s sport have still managed to grow their audiences throughout the years.

Men’s sport has been the primary entertainment for audiences around the world for a very long time. It wasn’t until late 19th century and early 20s that men’s sport started gaining popularity in the United States and Great Britain. They were broadcasted for the world to see for the first time through a radio broadcast. In fact the first live sport that was broadcasted was a men’s boxing match that took place in the 1920’s. Overall it’s not hard to see that men have been dominating sports since the beginning.

Sophomore Ava Goode argued that “when athletes are really good in a sport that makes people wanna watch the sport, for example Catlin Clark played college basketball and played really good, which made people more interested in college sports and even try and participate in them.” This goes to both women’s and men’s sports. In contrast women’s sport has seen tremendous growth in audiences for their sports throughout the years, especially in sports like soccer and basketball. Although this is nothing compared to the men’s sports, it still shows us how a lot of young female athletes are becoming more and more interested in pursuing their passion for the sport they desire. Broad run high school teacher/JV girls basketball coach Mrs Abdalla expressed her feelings towards the interest in women’s sports evolving over time by saying “ Absolutely, nobody was watching girls play anything while I was growing up and now its like huge, weather its the Williams sister, Catlin Clark, or Angle Reese we’ve seen a big uptick in women’s sport.”

Despite all the reasons that men’s sport is overall better than women’s sport and without hesitation we all know they dominate professional sports. I still think that women are still the overlooked champions. They’ve only come so far, working hard every chance they get. With this I think they deserve a little appreciation and support.
