Music taste is a controversy across the globe. The music industry is a source of major drama for people of all ages, including the singers themselves. There are many cases of conflict, Kenrick Lamar vs. Drake, Katy Perry vs Taylor Swift, and Sabrina Carpenter vs Olivia Rodrigo. Some conflict is rooted in the singers themselves, but others are fan based disagreements in which the content and personalities of the artists themselves are being compared, much like the latter. While Carpenter and Rodrigo were ‘beefing’ in the early 2020s, sources have said their differences have come to an end.

The conflict between the popular artists began in 2021 when Carpenter began seeing Rodrigo’s ex, Josua Bassett. This rumor was never confirmed, but it prompted Rodrigo to release her hit, “Drivers License”, which is arguably the song that brought her worldwide attention. The lyrics refer to a “blonde girl” who is “everything [she is] insecure about”. The song captivated the audience, and the Olivia Rodrigo fandom was born. Sabrina Carpenter wrote a song, ‘Skins’ about their drama, which attracted many fans. Carpenter went on to put together her Short N’ Sweet album, and her debut with “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” is what really bought her attention, and put her songs on the charts in 2024. Morgan Buckler, sophomore, speaks on this. “I think they both benefited from the exposure, and it sparked some of their greatest hits.” Her album tour was sold out, and clips of her concerts went viral on social media platforms. Olivia Rodrigo’s tours, Guts World Tour and Sour tour were both sold out immediately, and were huge hits.

While both artists are now famous, is their “beef” really in the past? Buckler, a Rodrigo fanatic states, “When the drama was happening, I was so Olivia Rodrigo, like ‘OMG I love her, she’s my favorite person ever’, and I never really heard Sabrina’s side. But then she came out with ‘because i liked a boy’ and I was like, ‘wait, I kinda feel bad for her too.’” In 2022, Olivia Rodrigo was interviewed about the speculatory rumors between the two stars. She confirmed that the conflict originated because of the love triangle of Joshua Bassett, as mentioned before. She stated that she doesn’t “subscribe to hating other women over men,” and proceeds to downplay their dispute. The actors have been in many other significant relationships since them, and seem to have moved past it. These include their current relationships, Louis Partridge, famous actor and Rodrigo’s boyfriend. The actors appear to be on good terms, and while they aren’t necessarily close, they are friends in light of the press. They have had many significant interactions, including a photographed conversation at the Met Gala, and they shared a touching conversation that ended with a hug at the 2025 grammy awards. Grace Luby, sophomore says, “I think it was the perfect ending to the drama of years past.”

Speculation over a collaboration has swept through fans. In light of the new friendship, most fans are ecstatic, and love to see the two artists flourishing in their own unique perspectives. Buckler, in the conclusion of the interview, says, “I think they’re both great in their own ways, and they shouldn’t be compared over something that happened a long time ago.”. Both songwriters have harnessed much success through the more recent years, and fans hope that the conflict remains in the past.
