On July 15th, Terry McLaurin would set time aside to speak with reporters regarding the lack of progress on his contract extension: “I want to continue my career here. I’ve created my life here. Just to see how things have played out has been disappointing”. Later that week, McLaurin would express his frustration by requesting a trade from the organization.
When news broke out that Terry McLaurin requested a trade, fans broke into outrage. An organization once faithful to Adam Peters, now started questioning if he knew what he was doing. The last thing the organization needed was to lose their franchise star right as things were starting to look positive. After all, McLaurin managed to stay loyal to the organization after an extensive number of quarterback changes and franchise heartbreaks. Two local Washington Commander fans here in Broad Run were interviewed to hear about their thought process through this scary situation. Alejandro Salinas, a sophomore, said, “I felt pretty sad once I heard the news, but I believe that he definitely needs to get paid, even if it means going to another team.” Another Commander’s fan, Mr. Summers, a Safety and Security Officer here in Broad Run, added: “I was shocked, but I never thought he was going to get traded. I was just hoping that the Commanders get the deal done soon.”
On August 25th, Terry McLaurin and the Washington Commanders would come to an agreement towards a contract extension. The district was suddenly relieved, not even considering the amount of money sacrificed to keep Scary Terry with the team. It was later reported that with the new contract, McLaurin would receive a thirty million dollar signing bonus and earn twenty-nine million dollars annually across three years. “He’s worth every penny, I was excited here in Broad Run. Mr Lawrence, one of the other security guards, is a Commander’s fan too. So I instantly went to him and told him about the extension.” said Mr. Summers when he was asked about how he felt when the news broke out. On the other hand, Alejandro added, “I’m happy he’s back with the team, I want to see another successful season.” This new lucrative contract would rank him 9th among other receivers.
Terry will be entering his seventh season in the NFL, where he has been actively maintaining a one-thousand receiving yard milestone across the span of five seasons. Last season, Terry McLaurin managed to break the franchise record for most touchdown receptions in one year with thirteen. The previous record holder was set in 1988 by Ricky Sanders with twelve touchdown receptions. The offense in D.C has improved by a longshot with talent surrounding Terry, we can expect a less-intense workload this upcoming season.
Terry has reached thirty years old as we enter the 2025-2026 season, so that leads to the main question, “When will Terry start regressing?” It’s important to note that he’s coming off an all-pro season, so we’ll see how that factors into his performance throughout the season. However, we’ve seen the team captain remain consistent throughout his career despite the quarterback carousel.
