Netflix has been one of the most popular streaming services for years since its release on August 29, 1997, offering many choices of shows and movies that cater to many different people and their interests. It ranges from topics like Murder Mystery to Romance, with multiple pieces of media on the site offering a unique blend of several topics. Recently, however, an issue that many platforms have run into lately is the increased cost. With Netflix adding a new and much more expensive plan, is it even worth paying for anymore?
COVID-19 seemed to be the peak time for Netflix consumption, with many new shows and movies being watched constantly, such as Better Call Saul, The Great British Baking Show, and Money Heist, just to name a few. There were even people having trouble accessing it when Squid Game released, due to how popular it was, and it was even the most watched show for a time during the tail end of the pandemic, accumulating millions of dollars in just a few days after its release. For those who took their time watching it, the spoilers were inevitable.
Now, with the pandemic having sizzled out long ago and the prices on many apps going up, with no exception to Netflix, the apps audience has spread across other streaming platforms that have better offers and more variety in content. Some people are just used to it the most and don’t feel a need to switch up where they get their next watch, like freshman Murilo Gouvea, who said, “[Netflix] is the only platform I have at my house and I don’t watch anything else.” Other people express more disappointment for the site and consider other platforms, like junior Sanjana Vanjinathan who stated, “I think there’s things like Disney that have more options, and Netflix is constantly taking things off too” Plus, COVID allowed everyone to have a lot more free time and stay in the house, right at the heart of the TV, with the site just a click away. 5 years later, people have integrated other activities in their lives, and many don’t find enough time in the day to watch on the app or website as much.
With new things constantly coming out, Netflix is still moving forward as if it’s still the #1 platform, and maybe it believes itself to be, but with the its birth, COVID, and then the eventual rising price, it will never be as glorious as it was before.
