Students at Broad Run High School have various access with technological devices that include AI. Everyone knows what Artificial Intelligence can do but people have different opinions regarding its use and how it impacts people in terms of creativity and productivity. As a student, it’s interesting to use AI and see how we can take advantage of this easy access tool to learn and understand, but with teachers, it’s so despised. If it was made to make tasks easier, why do people question the use of AI so much?
Most users rely on AI thinking that it produces true information. Students especially, use AI for help with papers, equations, and understanding a concept more deeply, receiving an exact answer at a fast rate. This is helpful with students who are in a time crunch or just had a hard time understanding lessons in class and would rather self study.
The way AI presents information is through one click of a button, it’s simple to use. Once a user inputs a question, it collects information through writings from all over the internet and simply summarizes it and uses basic terms to understand. The problem with that is not everything on the internet is necessarily right. Junior, Jacob Mapa says “AI is never always very accurate. There are some times where AI will spit out a bunch of nonsense and there are also other ethical developmental issues.” Most information seen on the internet isn’t proclaimed accurate because users can post whatever they want and AI blurts out the data gathered without filtering. It doesn’t include any citations which doesn’t allow users to double check if the information is correct.
Accepting work from students with the use of AI limits the effort that a teacher expects from one. Teachers throw out work for students to enhance and use the information taught to them by presenting it in a way that shows how much they know. Senior, Cyrille Angel says “Negative effects on AI are relying too much on it because with AI it makes people less independent of their creativity and thinking.” This leads to students losing motivation and dependance on an unreliable source.
AI is not recommended to use when students are expected to come up with answers for schoolworks but this doesn’t mean that it should be fully canceled out. Responsibility with AI is encouraged especially with the amount of positive aspects it can give.
It’s understandable how much teachers want students to limit their use with AI. It cancels out the potential a student could give. With how easy artificial intelligence is used, it makes it ten times easier for students to take advantage of it. AI was made to make simple tasks accomplished in just a shorter period of time but it doesn’t mean that the mind of this technology should be relied on.
