Have you been wondering why multicolored eggs and decorations are hanging around the stores? Well, that is because Easter is right around the corner. Easter is mostly celebrated by Christians who want to honor Jesus resurrecting from the dead. This year, it is celebrated on April 20, 2025. The background story, preparation, and celebration is very important to honor this special day.
The Background Story
Easter marks the day that Jesus rose from the dead after dying on the cross. Easter isn’t on the same day each year. The day it lands on depends on when the first Sunday is after the first full moon following the spring equinox. Two days before Easter that is also honored is Good Friday. On this day, Jesus is nailed to the cross and dies. However, on Easter, when people went to the tomb, they found that he had disappeared which means that resurrected from the dead. That is the significance of Easter.
Preparation
Many people also do many things to prepare or do before Easter. One example is Lent. Lent starts 40 days before Easter. During this time period, most Christians don’t eat meat on Fridays and they give up something that they like to do or enjoy. One person that observes lent is Katelyn. She said, “Many people give up things like favorite candies or a habit, but I decided to give up Netflix and iPAD because I use those a lot.”
Celebration
On Easter, families attend mass, pray together, and dye/decorate eggs. Sophomore Noel Ross remarked, “We have an Easter brunch, which means we eat eggs and other Easter themed food.” Sophomore Kateltyn Remes had another tradition where her family meets at a friends or family member’s house where they do an Easter egg hunt, but the eggs are replaced with cascarones. She explained, “Cascarones are eggshells that are filled with confetti. After the hunt, we crack the cascarones on each other’s head.”
Even though some people are not Christians, they still celebrate Easter. Some examples include eating together, baking meals, and going on an egg hunt. As Easter is coming closer day by day, come up with a creative way to celebrate Easter, either together with your family or with your friends.
