Are you ready for course recommendations? Have you still not decided what science to take next school year? If you don’t know, and you want to know some sciences that are available at Broad Run High School, then check out this article.
Biology
There are three Biology classes that are available, academic Biology, research biology, and AP Biology. For the first two options, there are no prerequisites required. For AP Biology, you would need to take either academic or research Biology and academic or research Chemistry. In this class, you learn about living systems, cellular organizations, genetics, ecosystems, and changes in organisms over time. Sophomore Parmleen Bath said, “I had Ms. Cooper last year, and my favorite part of research Biology was learning the different parts of the cell and applying knowledge in the labs.” Sophomore Margaret Maranto remarked, “I have Ms. Kollman for research Biology. My favorite part so far is the labs that we do, and my least favorite part is the notes that take all class, especially photosynthesis.
Chemistry
Just like Biology, there are three Chemistry classes. Those classes are academic Chemistry, research Chemistry, and AP Chemistry. For these classes, you need to take Algebra I (and pass the SOL) and Geometry. In these classes, you learn about kinetic theory, the periodic table, stoichiometry, redox equations, and chemical equilibrium. Parmleen remarked, “I am taking research Chemistry currently with Ms. Dise. My favorite part was when we were making Lewis and VSEPR structures, and my least favorite part was when we were using formulas to find the frequency and wavelength.”
Physics
There is conceptual Physics, Physics honors, and AP Physics. The prerequisite for conceptual physics is Algebra I. In this class, you explore the nature and characteristics of energy and its interaction with matter. This class draws connections between the concepts of physics and many everyday applications. The prerequisite for Physics honors is Algebra II/Trigonometry. In this class, you recognize that innumerable phenomena can be explained by a small collection of related concepts. This is also a college preparatory Physics course. The prerequisite for AP Physics (also called AP Physics C) is you have to be concurrently taking or have already taken AP Calculus AB. In this class, you will learn about kinematics (motion), dynamics (forces), circular motion, gravitation, simple harmonic motion, momentum, impulse, energy, work, rotational motion, and torque.
