With a wide variety of electives there is sure to be a class for everyone.
One new elective that is being offered this year is called Young Adult Literature, taught by ninth grade English teacher and yearbook advisor, Mrs. Dyer. This class is aimed at making reading more fun again, outside of all the academic pressures of a traditional English class, such as the typical essays and tests. According to Mrs. Dyer “The goal of this class is to help students reconnect with the joy of reading.” What makes this class different compared to your traditional English class is through its prioritization on enjoyment and personal growth over grades with Mrs. Dyer says that the class is more about the value of the books themselves than the grade you get. Additionally students also engage in group discussions, where students share their thoughts on the book they are reading and even go as far as incorporating media and other cultural texts. Whether you’re a student looking to ignite your passion for reading again or already love reading then this elective is perfect for you.
If you are looking for a rewarding and relaxing elective, Yoga, taught by PE teacher Mrs. Kauffmann might be for you. Offered at Broad Run for about 6 years, the focus of this course is on the history of yoga and its practice, highlighting various techniques such as time management, de-stressing techniques, and stretching for trouble areas. This course is designed to allow students to better manage their time and create an overall balance.
What makes this class so unique compared to other classes is that Mrs. Kauffman is the only teacher that teaches yoga at Broad Run, making it an opportunity you don’t want to miss. When asked what’s unique about this elective she had this to say: “A lot of schools try to have a yoga department, but our experience here at Broad Run has been super successful, and we keep growing the program.” Along with mastering various poses such as the warrior pose and the Savasana, which is the corpse pose, you will also learn various real life skills. As Mrs. Kauffman says “It doesn’t matter if you’re an all-star athlete or if you barely move off your couch—this class is for everyone,” so don’t be afraid to put this class on your schedule for next year.
Are you interested in history? Specifically, Russian history? Have you ever sat in your World History class wishing you could learn more about Russian history? If you answered yes, then the Russian history elective is perfect. Taught by World History one and two teacher Mr. Aevermann, the main purpose of this class is to educate students on European and Eurasian history, ultimately exposing them to the eastern side of the world. “I think it’s good because it’s different from anything else you’ll get at Broad Run,” shared Mr. Averman. This class, which has been offered for three years, allows students to explore Russian culture and history in detail, which is not normally done.
Beyond the classroom, students take a trip to the Hillwood Museum in DC, the largest Russian history museum in the world, which allows students to view Russian artifacts, memorabilia, and porcelain. This elective goes beyond the facts, by offering various activities to experience Russian culture such as tasting Russian dinner dishes. In addition to the cultural immersion, through this elective, you will gain a background for current events, such as the war in Ukraine. Through taking this class you will be able to broaden your perspective on the world, making this a class you don’t want to miss taking.
Broad Run has a wide range of electives that allow us as students the opportunity to go beyond core subjects. Whether you want to learn more about Russia through Russian History, rekindle your love for reading in Young Adult Literature, or just find a way to relax and learn yoga in Yoga, there is sure to be an elective for you out there.
