At Broad Run, students have the option to learn a foreign language, whether that be Latin, Spanish, German, or French. Not everyone decides to take a language, but the students who have taken the opportunity have had different experiences on their journey thus far.
Overall Experience
Students have expressed both positive and neutral thoughts on the topic. For example, Kadija Dia, a Spanish III student, says this about her experience, “My experience learning Spanish at Broad Run has been fine overall.” Many students at Broad Run would agree with Kadija, as numerous students seem to feel neutrally about their class.
Improvement
Many students at Broad Run can confidently say they have improved their speaking, writing, and reading skills. Some have improved certain skills, such as Lexi Russell. Lexi, a French III student, shares this about her improvement in French so far, “I would say that I have improved in my overall French skills, but I especially improved my reading and writing skills.” Kadija also says that she has improved in certain areas, by stating “Spanish III has helped me improve my reading and speaking skills.” This shows how taking a foreign language has been not only a positive experience, but an experience with rewards.
Is taking a foreign language worth it according to students?
Based on what was stated by the students above, taking a foreign language is definitely worth it, as it allows students to learn something totally new and/or improve their foreign language skills. Students have also said that their experience has been an okay one. This means that students can gain knowledge while simultaneously being calm in class.
Through Lexi and Kadija, it is clear that the language department has been efficient at teaching and improving students’ skills. Overall, while acquiring a new language can be challenging, student experiences at Broad Run seem to reflect that the classes are generally effective and beneficial.
