K-dramas have been getting very popular recently. Many K-drama shows have been released and getting lots of views. The rise of K-dramas has been increasing since 2020, but 2023 was a year of really good shows! Let’s take a look at the shows that really stood out to the audience.
Many Korean actors and actresses are getting more recognition because of their popularity in their shows. Song Kang and Kim Yoo-Jung got a lot of admiration from the public because of their show called My Demon. Song Kang also plays in the horror show called Sweet Home. Song Kang is very famous for his charming roles. Senior Georgia Hafoba said, “Song Kang is my favorite actor because he always plays his role so well and his acting is natural. It’s not forced.” Another popular K-actor is Cha Eunwoo. He’s currently doing a show called A Good Day to Be a Dog. Then there’s Rowoon and Jo Bo-ah who had their hit show called Destined With You.
The show My Demon is about a demon, played by Song Kang, who collects souls to go to hell. He goes to someone who’s having a tough time or in a hopeless situation. Once the demon convinces the person to sign the contract, he becomes more powerful. Unfortunately, he loses his powers which goes to the main love interest, who’s played by Kim Yoo-jung. Sweet Home, is about a troubled teenage boy who’s trying to avoid the apocalypse of humans turning into monsters. With the help of his neighbors, they try to survive the chaotic situation. A Good Day to Be a Dog is about a teacher with a curse from generations ago. When she kisses someone, they turn into a dog at midnight for six hours. In Destined With You, a lawyer has an ages-old curse that’s associated with a civil servant who’s the answer to all his problems. The curse is a bloody hand touching his face at any time.
All of these shows have a lot of supernatural and magic going on in their story. It’s definitely binge-worthy. If you’re interested in watching some K-dramas, a classic one to start with is Boys Over Flowers. It’s one of the best oldies K-dramas out there. Hafoba said, “My favorite K-drama is Boys Over Flowers because it is about a love and hate relationship between two teenagers. It also shows how we as humans don’t give up on someone we love.” It came out on January 5, 2009, which was a while ago, but you should certainly give it a shot. The main lead, Lee Min-ho plays the rich and arrogant student and Koo Hye-sun plays a regular, small-town girl. You can stream this on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.
