Tick, Tick… Boom!

Tick, Tick... Boom!

One of 2021’s saving graces was the musical drama “Tick, Tick… Boom!’ Directed by the amazing Lin Manuel Miranda, this film was a masterpiece. Miranda and 2 of the ‘Hamilton’ ladies: Phillipa Soo and Renée Elise Goldsberry even made a cameo in one of the diner scenes. And if you love musicals like me, your jaw would be left on the floor along with mine.

Let’s dive into the movie. This movie is based on the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson. Larson was an aspiring composer who longed to be on Broadway. The main track “30/90” encapsulates his growing pains about turning 30 and not being accomplished yet. Still living in Soho New York, he feels as if he is running out of time. Hence the ticking throughout the film.

The reason why ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’ Came about because his other musical titled ‘Superbia’, even after 15 years of putting it together, failed. Jonathan’s agent Rosa Stevens tells him that the piece was influential but that it wouldn’t sell. “Producers sell what sells, not what artists create.”

The casting has got to be one of the most perfect things about this. Jonathan Larson played by everyone’s favorite Andrew Garfield, he really sells the show. He even got a vocal coach to learn to sing for the part, and that was so worth it. Along with Garfield we got Vanessa Hudgens, Alexandra Shipp, Robin de Jesus, and more. Even now, Andrew won best actor in a motion picture (musical or comedy) at the Golden Globes.

If you haven’t seen this movie then you absolutely need to. It’s amazing. (Pun intended) Enjoy the movie!
