As the Washington Mystics are facing a winner-take-all game tomorrow against the Connecticut Suns at 8:00 p.m. in DC tomorrow, we look back through how they got here. Their key player is Elena Delle Donne, who is the reigning MVP of the WNBA, and she plays the position of small forward. Delle Donne was previously the MVP in 2015 and is a six time WNBA All Star. However, even with great players, the Mystics would not have gotten here without Coach Mike Thibault, who has the most wins of any coach in the history of the WNBA. Thibault previously coached the Connecticut Sun for ten seasons, which is the team that they will play tomorrow night. I am more than confident that the Mystics will win tomorrow night.
However, even with all this great talent, the WNBA Players are seriously underpaid compared to their male counterparts in the NBA. The highest paid player in the WNBA is Jewell Loyd of the Seattle Storm, who is earning $120,000 this season. The highest paid player in the NBA is Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, who earned a whopping $42.2 million this past season. The main reason for this is because the WNBA has little interest from young viewers. Most people who watch basketball are usually young people and when they are not attracted to the WNBA, there is no way that they will be able to generate enough revenue to pay the players more. A lot of people watch the NBA and they already have more than enough revenue.
I personally think that people should show more respect to women’s basketball. They are extremely talented, and as evident by their salaries, most of them play for the league because of their love of the game of basketball. The Washington Mystics have also had way more success compared to other DC teams such as the Redskins who have not made the playoffs since 2015. The Mystics have made the WNBA Finals back-to-back, which is really impressive. Basketball fans should definitely show more homage towards the WNBA and it is honestly such a joke that they don’t.
